A gritty New Adult drama about a young woman’s self-destructive quest to find purpose, self-worth, and love in a broken world.

My name is Elise Duchamp. I’m twenty-three years old and I’m known as the town whore.

No, not the kind who exchanges sexual favors for money. The other kind. The kind who gives it all away for free, whenever and however she likes. I am that girl. The one everyone whispers about and the one none of the girls seem to like, because all of their boyfriends either want to sleep with me or already have. Promiscuity is my thing—the kind that slowly, violently turns my insides black, but gives me something I need.

All things considered, I’m not completely reckless. I’m safe, and contrary to popular opinion, I do have a heart. I live in a world of careless choices, and with those choices come careless people. I cannot judge them, because I am one of them. I too bow down to the altar of the self-serving. I am not a good friend. I am not and never could be anyone’s girlfriend. I’m convinced any goodness in me shriveled up and died long ago.

But I am a replacement. That is something I know how to be, and this is a story of the lengths I’d go to in order to keep it that way.

Adrienne's Review

If you’re looking for something different, something that will make you uncomfortable, something that will make you cringe, then The Replacement by Rachael Wade is for you.  I’ve had the pleasure of reading a few of Rachael’s books and I’m fairly confident that this is her best so far.

This is the first time in a long time where I felt like I was put through the ringer after reading.  I had an inkling going in what it was about but I was in no way prepared for the nervous way I felt the entire time I read it.

You know how you read a story and you can predict with the main character is going to do?  You’re fairly confident with the way the scene plays out what he or she may say or do?  You feel the change coming, you know the hard, rough edges can’t last the entire time.  At some point the heroine/hero will conform or buckle or have some sort of epiphany.

Forget it.

Our female in this book is Elise.  Elise is transformed in a way I would have never predicted based on her childhood.  Her mind has come up with a way to protect itself like nothing I have seen or read before.  It was painful to read.  Painful in that her actions were not only hurting herself but each and every other person she came in contact with.  Yet she didn’t care.

I’ve read several books with suicidal characters.  Nine times out of ten they don’t go through with it.  Elise isn’t suicidal however if she were, she would be the one out of ten that would go through with it and have no remorse what’s so ever.  Elise is single handedly the most broken character I’ve come across.

“That’s all you are, you slut–a replacement.  Sloppy seconds and an in between quickie for every guy in this town who’s looking to fill a hole.”

Every word in that quote is true.  Everyone knows it.  Elise knows it.

“I’m a whore!  I’m rotten to the fucking core…”

“I’m Elise Duchamp, and I destroy relationships.  I destroy people.  Wives, girlfriends, good people.  People like you.  I fuck their husbands, their boyfriends, eat their food, sleep in their beds.”

When Ryder comes along, Elise isn’t sure what to think of him.  She knows she wants him but she’s convinced she doesn’t deserve him.  Ryder just wants Elise but he want’s all of Elise.  He wants to help her see her potential.  He wants her to see that she can be so much more than what she’s decided for herself.  He’s so gentle with her, so sweet.  But Elise is stubborn and she fights it.  Boy does that girl fight it.

I would love to smack the hell out of Elise’s father.  The damage he did…..irreparable.  Elise is lucky to have Jay on her side, he’s a father figure for her.  One she desperately needs, especially now that Ryder is confusing her.  He shows her the kind of unconditional love that she’s never had before.  He’s one of the only people she cares about, that she tries to not hurt.

“All I want to say to you is that you’re too goddamn beautiful, too goddamn smart, and too goddamn good for a life like that, you hear me?”

He says what she needs to hear even though she doesn’t want to listen.

Things I expected to happen didn’t and things I didn’t think would happen did.  I ate up every word too.  I couldn’t put the book down.  I wasn’t sure how this story would end.  I wasn’t even sure how I wanted it to end.  Rachael Wade does Elise’s story justice though and I was happy with the conclusion.

  1. Adrienne, thank you SO much for being a part of this tour. Your review completely blew me away and made my morning. I’m so glad you enjoyed Elise’s story. I know it’s not an easy one to read – it certainly wasn’t to write!

If you have a moment, would you mind posting your review to Amazon as well? It’s such a good one and I’d be honored to have it on the book’s product page.

Thanks again for giving this a read.

    Much love,

  2. Great review! This sounds like a very emotional read and Elise like such a broken character. I personally love these kinds of raw, gritty reads so this is right up my alley!
