They say it takes 21 days to form a habit.
For 21 days she held on.
But on Day 22, she would have given anything for the sweet slumber of death.
Because on Day 22, she realizes that her only way out means certain death for one of the two men she loves.
A haunting tale of passion, loss, and redemption, The Paper Swan is a darkly intense yet heartwarming love story, textured with grit, intrigue, and suspense. Please note: This is NOT a love triangle.
A full-length, standalone novel, intended for mature audiences due to violence, sex and language. Subject matter may be disturbing for some readers.
Brilliant. Stunning. Mesmerizing. The Paper Swan is captivating, haunting, intense. It’s a love story that needed to be told.
I’ve often said “I have a book hangover” after staying up all night reading. Having to finish a book because it’s that good. Knowing that I won’t sleep even if I try, till I know how it ends. None of those hangovers prepared me for The Paper Swan by Leylah Attar. Every word, every sentence, every paragraph is taunting me. Begging me to describe it, to do it justice. Can a book be summed up in one word? Brilliant. Stunning. Mesmerizing. I guess that’s three words technically. For me they sum up not only The Paper Swan but Ms. Attar as well.
“You don’t always get the treasure by holding on. Sometimes the magic happens when you let go.”
The Paper Swan forced me to think outside the box. No longer could I justify what I thought a dark romance was. I’ve had to leave all my preconceived romance notions at the door. They simply do not apply here. I went through every emotion imaginable and I loved every single one of them. I was panicked, scared, worried, curious, angry, and calm. I felt heartache, sympathy, and understanding and my heart ached for these characters. And in those special moments, I felt love, sexy, sweet, sultry, and all consuming, I’d do anything and everything for you love.
“In the grand scheme of things, we do the best we can, all of us, and we make up our stories as we go along; we write them and direct them and project them into the world. And sometimes we get other people’s stories, and sometimes we don’t, but always there is a story behind a story behind a story, linked in a chain that we can only see a small part of, because it’s there when we’re born and it continues after we’re gone. And who can comprehend all of it in one lifetime?”
There are so many intricately woven pieces to this story and every character has a defined and important role to play. Ms. Attar makes it easy to choose a side. Lines are drawn. Right and wrong defined. But then she erases all of it, redraws the lines, muddies what you think you knew, gives you an alternative look. She allows you to define what side you’re on. She allows you to feel your feelings. Giving you an opportunity to make this story be what you want it to be. Is it a love story? Is it about vengeance or redemption? What is The Paper Swan to you? The Paper Swan was all those things for me and then some.
This quote sums up my feelings quite well.
“I tried to keep afloat, clutching at him, but I didn’t stand a chance. My hurt, my anger, my tears were tossed aside by something deeper, something vast and true and powerful and endless.”
