A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.
When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.
Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.
Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.
Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.
And that — that, I know how to do.
I’m not surprised. There comes a time in an author/reader relationship where you realize the author will never fail you. You know what I mean right? You’ve finally read enough of their books that you know…you know that every story with their name on it will be golden. What you can’t predict is which one will ultimately be your favorite. I’ve been holding Drew Evans from Tangled in my death grip for well over a year now. I have no plans of letting him go..until now and darn it Jake Becker where did you come from?
If you haven’t read an Emma Chase book I implore you to do so immediately. Emma Chase’s writing is lyrically masterful. It has this very real quality, a vulnerability if you will. Her characters and their stories remain complex while adding humor to soften the sometimes harsh realities. She is able to write a story from a male prospective like no other in my opinion. Jake Becker is absolutely no exception, he’s tough on the outside and all mush in the middle with lots and lots of ego manliness mixed in. He’s everything he portrays if not a little deluded in his abilities to handle his fears.
You’ll find yourself quickly lost in Sustained the story is a powerful one. Jake is the consummate playboy who finds himself on Chelsea’s doorstep. Chelsea is still reeling from the death of her brother and his wife, and left with the enormous responsibility of raising six kids. I don’t think Jake realized how much he wanted to help this family nor do I think he fully realized the impact they were having on him until wait later in the book. Emma Chase did an outstanding job of giving each child their own voice and personality. All six kids have an important role in Sustained. I’m not sure she could have written it without each of them.
You can only begin to imagine the stress and pressure that Chelsea’s character is under. Putting her own life on hold to raise her nieces and nephews. All of them dealing with the grief and loss in their own ways. The daily struggle I can’t even begin to understand how she held it all together alone. All of that aside, there are some endearing, crazy, scary, and more often than not hilarious scenarios mixed in and all around Sustained. The deeper Jake gets the harder it’s going to be for him to leave. He knows that and the reader knows that.
When you take everything else away–money, clothes, nice cars, big houses–all a man has is his word. That he says exactly what he means, and he does what he says. If a man doesn’t have his word, he’s not a man.
It’s the journey for Jake that appealed to me most. Here was this self made man who had some serious mistakes in his past trying to live a structured, responsible life. He likes structure, routine, he wants to be in charge. We all know that can’t happen with six kids. There’s bound to be cracks and fissure in that resolve. I thought Emma did a fantastic job of showing Jake’s internal struggle. Those deep seated fears from childhood that play a part when making grown up choices and decisions. It’s that jumping without fear of getting hurt. Taking chances when you never thought you would and reaping the rewards of a beautiful life.
This is a story about family. I guarantee you will smile, you will laugh out loud and you will most definitely shed a tear or two. All of it worth it.
