Black Hearts is a BRAND NEW STANDALONE DUET - the second book and conclusion, Dirty Souls, releases March 17th.

For Vicente Bernal, truth is all he’s known. The son of an infamous drug lord, Vicente was born to help run the family business, which means he’s been raised on a throne of sordid pasts and dirty laundry, violence and pride. But when Vicente stumbles across someone he’s not supposed to know about – a woman from his father’s checkered past – he sets out to California to find her behind his father’s back.

What Vicente doesn’t expect to find in San Francisco is Violet McQueen, the woman’s twenty-year old daughter. Beautiful and edgy with a vulnerability he can’t resist, Violet tempts Vicente from afar and though he promised himself he’d stay away from her, curiosity and lust are powerful forces. Besides, Vicente has always gotten everything he wants – why shouldn’t he have Violet too?

Soon his wants turn into an obsession, one that sweeps Violet into his games as they fall madly, deeply in love with each other, the type of first love that can drive a person mad.

But it’s a love with tragic consequences.

Both the truth – and the lies – not only threaten to tear them apart, but threaten their very lives.

Someone has to pay for the sins of the fathers.

And they’ll be paying the price with their souls.

Black Hearts is a BRAND NEW STANDALONE DUET - the second book and conclusion, Dirty Souls, releases March 17th.

Black Hearts is the beginning of a duet, an offshoot of the Sins & Needles series.  BUT you do not have to read the backstory to enjoy or even understand what’s happening.  Unless you want to of course!  This is about Vicente Bernal, son of Javier Bernal and Violet McQueen, the daughter of Ellie Watt and Camden McQueen.  Karina Halle does an excellent job of filling in all the missing pieces in a way that makes it easy for any reader to pick up and enjoy her books.  The journey of Vicente and Violet is one of secrets and lies.  Their family history alone makes for one shaky foundation, yet without it there would be no story.  If there’s one thing Karina Halle can do, it’s write about the dark, seedy, and somewhat strangely honorable life of those in a drug cartel.  I don’t know how she manages to make you fall for these dangerous, scary men…but you do…you end up loving them.

Drug cartels are no walk in the park.  There are no rainbows, no butterflies.  It’s all about building an empire, demanding respect, being feared, maintaining control, and having something to leave to an heir.  Vicente is that heir.  But what’s interesting in Black Hearts, is his internal struggle to accept his fate.  Does he want what his father expects?  Is he really whom he was bred to be?  All he knows is; loyalty is gold and anything less is betrayal.

I’m not sure yet how I feel about Violet.  She’s a work in progress, even within herself, there’s a lot of confusion.  As a reader I felt it.  It will be interesting to see where she ends up.  She’s grown up in what she sees as a loving home with weird parents.  Her life “seems” typical.  But she feels like something else is at play.  She can’t put her finger on it.  While she soul searches and questions everything, she’s also learning a lot about herself and what she wants. Violet may end up be the most interesting character yet.  I see an avenue here for something really amazing.

Together Vicente and Violet make for a couple that smolders on the pages.  They’re danger in the making. And man are they hot together.  They’re on top of a world they know very little about.  The seams are about to bust, secrets cascading out like a waterfall.  When the dust settles there’s no telling who will be left standing.  I’m actually nervous about it.  The idea that Karina Halle brought an original story full circle like this is mind boggling.  I can’t believe that I’m actually hoping Javier Bernal’s son and Ellie Watt’s daughter actually end up in a happily ever after.  That may be far fetched in this world but a girl can always hope!

Any Halle fan will gobble this up.  If you’re new to Karina Halle’s books, then I welcome you with open arms.  You’re gonna love her, you’re gonna love this book  Every story is complex, this one is no exception.  It’s an intriguing, enticing, sexy story of Black Hearts.
