From the acclaimed bestselling author of Lost to You and When We Collide comes a New Adult novel of one woman’s obsession: a man who’s as passionate as he is elusive—and as tempting as he is trouble...
Aleena Moore is haunted by Jared Holt. It’s been six years since she’s seen her brother’s best friend, the self-destructive bad boy she secretly loved in high school. As the years pass, she knows it’s time to move on. Time to decide between a practical nursing degree and her true dream as an artist. Time to get over Jared and give another guy a chance... Just when she opens her heart to her friend, Gabe, Aly returns home to find Jared sleeping on her couch. The teenage boy she loved has grown into a man she can’t resist. Covered in tattoos and lost in rage, he’s begging to be saved from his demons—the memories of the day he destroyed his family. As the two reconnect, their passion is hot enough to torch Aly’s judgment. But can she risk her future for a man who lives on the edge of destruction?
Come To Me Quietly by A.L. Jackson is a bittersweet love story.
Jared left 6 years ago. Aleena has waited for 6 years for him to return.
Jared has been on a course of self destruction for 6 years. He knows he shouldn’t come back but he’s drawn back. Aleena knows she shouldn’t pine away for Jared. She doesn’t know where he is or when he’s coming back. If he’s coming back. She’s trying to focus on college and maybe even allowing herself to date. But all of the sudden Jared shows up.
He’s so broken. He has no purpose. He doesn’t believe he deserves to be happy so he does everything in his power to stay miserable.
Aleena is shocked to see Jared. I think she was shocked at the reaction she has to being near him. She’s always loved him she just didn’t have the tangible him. Now he’s back and she’s desperate for him to stay.
The thing is Jared doesn’t want to be loved. He doesn’t feel like he deserves any happiness at all. So he struggles with what he wants and what he thinks he should have. He’s constantly fighting an internal battle with himself. There was no denying he had feeling for Aleena. It was just a matter of whether he would allow himself to act n them.
The sexual tension between the two was undeniable. It was electric. It was dangerous. It didn’t take much to set Jared off. Once he was set off he’d leave. That boy left so many times. It bordered on ridiculous. I understood his desire to continue to hate himself but it was really hard to watch him constantly leave. I really wanted him to man up and stick around every now and then. But the instinct to flee is so strong sometimes. I get that.
Aleena, I thought came across as an intelligent young woman. I understood her connection to Jared. I understood her need to help him. I just wish she’d open her mouth more. It felt like she repeated the same things over and over again. I wanted just a little tiny bit more from her. I wanted to see her personality come through during the difficult times not just the fun times.
As broken as Jared is, he had some great moments in this story. It was at those times where I really felt like I was seeing Jared. He was open and receptive. I really wanted more open and receptive Jared!
“I’d sought sanctuary in her touch.”
I think way deep down Jared wanted to be free of his guilt. He wanted to be loved just as much as he wanted to love. He just didn’t know how to let go. That is until he spent more time with Aleena. However, it didn’t matter how close they became, he refused to let himself go completely.
“You think I can’t feel this? How badly you want the things I can’t give you? That’s why it makes me sick that I’m doing this, because I already warned you…you can’t fix me, and you can’t say or do something that will change my mind or fill up the void in my soul.”
Aleena would do anything for Jared. All she wanted was for him to realize that he was worthy of love. The moments they were together were beautiful. Even the pain filled moments were poignant. Even the angst was beautiful in its own way.
“The storm raged around us, so much like the man who held me in his arms. Violent. Unpredictable, Beautiful.”
We do eventually learn the secrets of both Aleena and Jared.
I think you will easily fall in love with Jared.
The story doesn’t end with a huge cliffhanger, however, it’s obvious there is more to this story.
