Chris leaned on the counter. He looked down at his hands, calloused and dirty. They were strong hands. Killing hands. The tools of his trade, and he was feeling strangely detached from life in Afghanistan today. His head still echoed with the sound of bullets and the screams of horses. He could still smell the blood and the death.
It was inside him—part of him. Like a physical thing, the blood and carnage of this place had wrapped itself inside his chest and hardened there, making it impossible to sleep at night or to walk from the barracks to the chow hall without resting his hand on his gun, waiting for the attack to come.
Interview with #1 bestselling author Summer Lane
Unbreakable SEAL is your first book that is not necessarily set in the apocalypse. How do you feel about that?
It’s amazing! This is my fifteenth novel, and up until now, every book I’ve written has been right in the midst of an apocalyptic setting. I found a way to incorporate certain story elements that branch nicely into the Collapse Series, however. Chris Young is a massive part of that series, after all. I’m excited to show this side of him, and to tell a story that is set in the present.
What inspired you to write SEAL?
Commander Chris Young. He’s one of my favorite characters from my original series, and he has such an incredible backstory. I’ve always wanted to give him his own novel, and now I finally have! It will explain some things about him – why he is who he is, and why he makes such a great leader. Plus, I love writing about SEALs. I watched SEALs train once on Coronado Island, California, and I’ve had a bit of a love-fest with the whole organization ever since.
How did you research for a book like this?
I am obviously not in the military, but I know and have grown up with a lot of people who are. I did extensive research over the years for my apocalyptic books – I’m always writing action novels, tactical scenes, shootouts, gunfights, battles, skirmishes…That research has aided me in the creation of SEAL. This novel is meant to be a fun adventure and thriller, but I also wanted to highlight the valor and honor of that branch of the military. SEALs are badass, and they were always a perfect fit for the character of Chris Young.
Will there be any more books about Chris Young?
No. Chris’s story neatly ties into the world of Collapse – so if you want to know what happens to Chris after SEAL, check out the books of the Collapse Series.
What is your next project/release?
Currently, I am finishing up State of Allegiance, the 9th novel in the Collapse Series. I will be working on tying up that series in 2017, as well as creating some new and exciting stories for readers.
