Adrienne's Review

The premise of When I Break is almost funny.  Knox is a sex addict and McKenna is his sex addiction counselor.  No that’s not what’s funny.  What’s funny is that she’s a virgin and gorgeous and well….he’s gorgeous and a SEX ADDICT!

LOL that right there my friends is trouble in the making!

But the story is anything but funny.  Yes there are some moments where you may smile however, for the most part this isn’t a silly story at all.  It’s actually quite tragic.  Knox is raising his brothers after his mother’s death and his father’s disappearing act.  He’s the sole provider for them and he’s only in his early 20’s.  That means he quit high school early, had 2 jobs and doesn’t see college in his forseeable future.

What would you do under that kind of pressure?  Probably something not so great, like turning to alcohol or drugs.  Maybe you would binge eat or turn to sex.  Knox needs a break.  He needs a release.  He has the weight of the world on his shoulders.  I seriously felt for the guy.  I can understand his need to act out.  He didn’t get a chance to finish being a kid after all.  He probably has a difficult time imagining his future.

Knox’s mistakes find him in McKenna’s sex addiction sessions.  McKenna was a hard character for me to connect with.  I’m thinking maybe I’m just tired of the whiny girls.  She’s a college educated young lady that spends all of her free time volunteering.  She’s filling a void, the void of losing her parents.  This is where she lost me a bit.  She blames herself for their death in a car accident.  She was fighting with them, they in turn ended up leaving late and were hit by a drunk driver.  I get that she feels bad.  I can even understand that she carries a bit of guilt.  But she’s a counselor.  She should be trained to know that she’s not at fault.  Not really.  It seems to take over her entire world and that I don’t understand.

There’s some definite sexual chemistry with these two.  However, they appear to be such opposites in their sexuality that it’s hard at this point to see where they’re going to end up.  He needs to stay away from meaningless sex.  She’s not ready to give up the virginity to someone she can trust.  Right now they just aren’t working.

This book does end on a cliff of sorts.  It’s not shocking or anything but it does just end.  I will be picking up the second book.  I would like to see where these two are headed.

“What’s on your mind?” I asked, wiping my mouth on the napkin.

Pretty blue eyes pierced mine as she hesitated to answer.

“Say it, angel.”

“When I met you…I don’t know. I could feel your pain and knew you’d experienced more than your fair share of trauma too. I felt connected to you.”

I knew what she meant, but that didn’t mean I wanted to encourage her attachment to me. I would only end up hurting and disappointing her. Even if I did everything in my power not to, that was my track record with women.

“McKenna, I’m not going to deny that we have a connection. We do.”

“But?” she supplied, a trace of sarcasm in her voice.

“But…I fuck random girls. I use them for sex. I’m not a good guy. You shouldn’t be so nice to me.”

“You’ve made bad choices. You’ve messed up. But you’re not a bad guy. I see the way you are with your brothers, and attending group, that’s your way of trying to get better. You’re not going to scare me off so easily, Knox.”

My participation in her little meetings was practically court-mandated, and honestly, the only reason I’d continued going was because of my attraction to her, but I didn’t correct her, wouldn’t scare her off until she was ready to go.
