Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

With this bold and deeply personal novel, Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. Combining a captivating romance with a cast of all-too-human characters, It Ends With Us is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.

I want to start my review by saying that Marshall’s character is what got me through this book.  Otherwise I would have been a sobbing, hysterical, anxiety filled mess.  Oh wait…I was anyway.  But that’s besides the point.  Marshall added some much needed levity to an otherwise deeply moving story.  Colleen Hoover has stepped outside her comfort zone with this one.  You can tell in the hesitancy of her writing.  There is surety in the story but also a quiet resignation of what she about to tell us.

To say I was torn is an understatement.  Lily is in a position that no one wants to be in yet at times I was super envious of her.  There are multiple scenarios at play, many different paths for Lily to take.  Colleen could have gone the easy route with this character.  Instead she made Lily not only relatable, but a little naive, conflicted.  She made her vulnerable and real in a way that challenges the reader to understand her on a much deeper level.  Even Ryle’s character is hard not to love.  He’s everything a girl could want but most importantly he’s this dichotomy perfection and flaws. Atlas was an unexpected component and one that worried me throughout the book.  Every time I the story going one way, it would veer to the right.  I was left confused at times but yearning for more.

Cycles exist because they are excruciating to break.

This is a story of love in it’s purest sense.  The love of our parents and how their love shapes us.  The love of our first love and how that relationship creates this mold for every other person you fall for.  The love of friendship and how a best friend is by your side no matter the cost.  The love of oneself and just how hard it is to be good to ourselves.  To expect the best and demand it.  This is a romance full of happy, sexy, smile so hard your cheeks hurt filled pages.  But it’s also about falling in love twice and everything that comes with it.  It’s about loss.  It’s about forgiveness.  It’s about breaking a cycle you didn’t even know existed.  CoHo wrote something totally amazing here.  She’s given a voice to something that needs to be screamed from the rooftops.  She’s given women hope for a brighter future.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, there is something magical in Colleen Hoover’s writing.  She can make you laugh just as easily as she can make you cry.  This story will give you both.  You will find yourself smiling in one moment and completely torn apart in the next.  I had no idea where this story would lead Lily, Ryle, and Atlas.  I had no expectations going in and nothing but a desperate longing for a happy ending for all of them.  But life isn’t always about happy endings life is too real for that.  What you do get is closure.  Closure you can live with. So grab your tissues and your favorite pint of Ben and Jerry’s.  It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

It stops here.  With me and you.  It ends with us.

By leaps and bounds the best Colleen Hoover book yet.

I love music. LOVE music. Namely The Avett Brothers, Lumineers, Pink, Eminem. I have eclectic taste? If you have any recommendations, send them my way!

I’m addicted to diet pepsi and could tell you in a taste-test which restaurant it came from. It’s a serious addiction, I tell you.

I get stoked whenever I get a message from goodreads saying I have a new friend request…so request me, dangit!
