Eight years ago, Garrett Finnegan’s world shattered the day Mia vanished from his life. He’s been struggling to pick up the pieces ever since. Haunted by memories and ghosts of the past, he chooses a solitary existence rather than risk his heart again.
Mia Emerson has made one wrong decision after another but none worse than walking away from the boy who stole her heart so long ago. When her new life is turned upside down, she finds herself returning to her roots and the hometown she left behind. Maybe now she can find a way to heal from the devastating mistakes of her past.
When a chance encounter brings these former lovers together, passion reignites in a way neither is prepared for. Can Garrett move beyond his anger and find a way to forgive? Will Mia’s insecurities and fears cause her to once again flee the life she’s destined to live?
Garrett and Mia will soon discover that they must journey into the past to find their way home.
I was so excited for Garrett’s story! I couldn’t wait for Ready For You by J.L. Berg to be release! I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed. This is a heart wrenching story of second chance love, friendship, family, betrayal, forgiveness and redemption. Frankly, Ready For You has a little bit of everything in it. I knew from Garrett’s portrayal in previous books that he was a lost soul and a lost soul is exactly what he is. I just didn’t realize how tragic his story would be.
The love of Garrett’s life just ups and walks away the night they graduate from high school. Mia leaves only a note. Shortly after, her parent’s also move. Garrett is grief stricken, heart broken, and just lost. He eventually goes to college, and basically just goes through the motions of life. 8 years later, Mia shows up in Garrett’s hometown. He finds himself spiraling backwards and yet unable to still move forward. He’s so full of anger and love. The poor guy is overwhelmed with his feelings that he continuously finds himself on Mia’s new doorstep. Mia is a mystery. She doesn’t really tell anyone where’s shes been or more importantly why. She still have very strong feelings for Garrett but it’s obvious that her demons are way bigger than the both of them.
The one thing I love about J.L. Berg’s writing is that she keeps her stories fresh and she allows us to keep up with older characters while seamlessly introducing new characters. As time goes by children grow, people change, friendships are formed, some renewed and Ready For You gives you glimpses of all of it. You’ll be rooting for Garrett to forgive Mia at the same time silently (or not) begging Mia to spill her secrets.
There’s an event in the book that’s the catalyst to the story. When Mia has to be there for Garrett, it’s a true testament of their feelings for one another. It’s a turning point in the story and it’s where the healing begins. I was so touched by certain scenes and even shed a tear or two. I smiled many many times as some of my favorite characters stayed true to form and brought the much needed comic relief in this heavy story.
I can’t wait for whatever J.L. Berg has in store for us next!
